2021 SD VFW Baseball Community of the Year and Friends of SD VFW Baseball Released

Department of SD VFW Baseball Chairman, Danny Frisby-Griffin, released the results of the Program’s fourth annual VFW Youth Baseball Community of the Year. Drawing upon the set-aside funds and generous donations from the Frisby-Griffin Family and VFW Posts across South Dakota, VFW Baseball was able to provide the $1000 VFW Youth Baseball Community of the Year Award to Diamond Club Baseball Association, Webster VFW Post 4690 and the City of Webster. We are recognizing their extraordinary efforts in ensuring the safety and security of the players and fans for our season’s largest tournament with 20 Class B 12U teams. VFW Post 4690, Diamond Club Baseball Association and the community of Webster also went above and beyond in executing SD VFW Baseball’s first 16U All Star Game since 2004. All Star Game Day included a players’ skills showcase run by Northern State University and Dakota State University Head Coaches.

The VFW Executive Committee met September 7, 2021, to determine the awardee. The Committee used the score sheet posted on their website and were not surprised by how close the competition was again this year. VFW Baseball would have loved to award every one of these communities but as we’ve been saying this year…VFW Baseball is not in the “participation business” but in the “life lesson” and culture education business.

Congratulations go out to the community of Webster and their VFW members. Diamond Club Baseball Association worked with their community and VFW Post so baseball players across SD had the opportunity to play in one of the best baseball complexes in SD.

This year, we would like to recognize three organizations as Friends of VFW Baseball for their outstanding work and positive relationship with SD VFW Baseball with checks for $250. The Vermillion Parks and Recreation Department, working with the Vermillion VFW Post 3061, ensured a VFW member was at every game to recite the VFW Baseball Code of Conduct prior to the start. They put together a very well run tournament and we look forward to visiting them again soon.

We would like to thank Canistota/Freeman Baseball Association for the hard work they put in to get the Freeman Baseball Complex ready for their tournament weekend. Their positive, can do attitude was contagious and was a lot of fun to watch in action.

Finally, VFW Baseball would like to highlight the church members associated with the Center Field of Dreams. They hit it out of the park hosting SD VFW Baseball’s first 8U Machine Pitch State Tournament. The feedback was all positive and the teams are already looking forward to next year’s tournament.

If you are interested in ensuring the VFW tradition of youth baseball, please consider a donation to the VFW Baseball Grant Program. Your dollars will go to youth baseball programs and communities that may need assistance in providing their youth an opportunity to play baseball, recognize an outstanding baseball community/association as well as assist veterans’ programs. Your donation will not be used for VFW Baseball Program execution.

“This past season was interesting as we bounced back from COVID impacted summer. We’re extremely excited to be able to recognize communities and organizations for their outstanding support of VFW Youth Baseball. The SD VFW Baseball Program continues to support youth baseball and veterans’ programs across South Dakota,” said Frisby-Griffin. “We’re consistently striving to make SD VFW Baseball better each year. Make sure you make it to our 2022 16U All Star Game and Showcase to watch the outstanding players from across SD.”
